A good spice jar keeps masalas fresh, stacks neatly and survives daily use. A poor one leaks, stains or cracks within months. Here is what to check before you buy, how glass and plastic compare, and which of our jars suits which kitchen.

What to check before you buy

An airtight cap

Moisture and air dull the flavour of ground spices. Look for a cap with a seal, such as an insulated metal cap or a rubber gasket.

Food-grade material

Check that the glass or plastic is sold as food grade. It matters most for jars that hold ingredients you eat daily.

One matching size

Jars of the same height look tidy and fit a rack. Our pantry jar size guide shows which size suits what.

A mouth you can scoop through

If a spoon cannot reach the bottom, you will spill. Wider openings are easier to fill and clean.

Room for labels

A flat side makes labelling easy. Our label guide lists 131 names worth labelling.

Stain resistance

Turmeric and red chilli can colour plastic over time. Glass stays clear, so it suits strongly coloured spices.

Glass or plastic?

Glass spice jars

  • Do not hold smells or stains
  • You can see how much is left
  • Look neat on a rack or open shelf
  • Heavier, and can break if dropped

Plastic spice jars

  • Light and will not shatter
  • Lower price per jar
  • Easy to carry and move around
  • Can stain with turmeric and chilli

Our take: choose glass for the spices you use most, and plastic where weight or budget matters more, such as bigger jars for dal and rice.

Our spice jar options

Good to know: prices marked from are for the smallest pack, and larger packs of the same jar are available on the product page. Labels are included only in the combos that say so, and are also sold separately as the Spice Labels pack. The white front label will not fit the 200ml jar.

For a complete setup, our Dark Wood Spice Rack holds eight 380ml jars. See every option in Pantry Jars.

Looking after your jars

Dry fully before filling

Even a little water can clump ground spices. Let washed jars dry completely first.

Keep away from the stove

Heat and steam shorten the life of a spice. Store jars in a cupboard or on a rack away from the burners.

Label as you fill

Stick the label when you fill the jar, so a new masala never goes unmarked.
